Ask Steve - DP's 'House of Blue Light', opening for Rainbow, and under-appreciated g

Martin
Steve, can you answer me why Deep Purple never performs live songs from the House of Blue Light album?? Because I asked, and asked, and never got an answer.

Steve Morse
I could only answer that by guessing, but they really like the Machine Head material, possibly it just works best live, and definitely gets more recognition/response.  So, I guess you're still not getting a very good answer........

Just wondering if you remember a July 4th, 1978 show the Dixie Dregs opened up for at Edgewater Raceway in Cleves, Ohio. It's about 30 minutes north of Cincinnati and the lineup consisted of you guys opening, then Rare Earth, Rainbow, Rick Derringer, and the Outlaws headlined. It was my 1st exposure of you guys and I've been a fan ever since. Was this the only time you and Blackmore played on the same bill?

Steve Morse
Yes, and I ended up riding back to our hotel with Bruce Payne, Blackmore's (then) manager, and our current DP manager. I thought Rainbow sounded really good.

Sean, New York, NY
Are there any guitar players out there that you feel are severely under-appreciated? Who are some of your favorites?

Steve Morse
Most guitar players that are good are not well known, so there must be hundreds or thousands. I think the guitarist (Doug, I think) with Edgar Winter was really good. Of course, guys like Warren Haynes, Carl Verheyen, Jimmy Herring, John Finn, Eric Johnson, Metheny, Satriani, Vai, Petrucci, my old favorites, too, and half a dozen that I can't think of their names right this second.....
