Universal Music has announced the deluxe release of DEEP PURPLE’s seminal live album “Made In Japan” in multiple formats on May 19.

Together with LED ZEPPELIN and BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE has been referred to as the “unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal” in the early to mid-Seventies. One of the most influential and important guitar bands in history, they have sold over 100 million albums worldwide.

“Made In Japan” was recorded live over three nights during August 15–17, 1972 at Festival Hall, Osaka and Budokan, Tokyo. Four of the tracks come from the band’s 1972 “Machine Head” album. It featured what many consider the classic DEEP PURPLE lineup — Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (organ) and Ian Paice (drums). Originally recorded only for the Japanese market, the album has since become seen as one of DEEP PURPLE’s seminal albums, and one of the greatest live albums of all time (A Rolling Stone magazine readers poll in 2012 voted “Made In Japan” as the sixth greatest live album of all time).

May 19, 2014 will see the album newly remastered and released in a number of special formats. The format options include previously unseen footage on DVD, bonus material and mixes, memorabilia and a hardback book.

The “Made In Japan” formats:

* Limited Edition Super Deluxe 4 CD+DVD+7″ Boxed Set and Limited-Edition Super Deluxe 9LP Boxed Set
* Deluxe Edition 2CD
* 180g 2LP
* Blu-ray Pure Audio
* HD Download
* MFiT
* Standard Digital format

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich last year told writer Peter Makowski that he is working on getting his all-time favorite band, DEEP PURPLE, a long-overdue spot in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Asked why the creators of “Smoke On The Water” were not in there yet, Ulrich said, “What you’ve got to understand is that a lot of the people that have run the selection process are critics, and DEEP PURPLE, as you know, were never a critic’s band — especially in America, because their influence was probably felt more in Europe.”

But Ulrich added, “It’s only a matter of time. Rather sooner than later. We’ve already lost one member. The fact that LED ZEPPELIN and BLACK SABBATH are in and PURPLE is not is one of the crimes of that whole institution. We’ll get them in soon enough. I’m working on it.”

Founding PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord passed away in July 2012. Ulrich, who wrote a tribute to Lord on METALLICA’s web site, told Makowski, “I’m not sure that the people in today’s hard rock world really truly understand how innovative this guy was . . . he really did something nobody had done before with the sound of the keyboards and I think that’s probably the biggest thing to remember him for.”

At their own induction in 2009, METALLICA’s James Hetfield included PURPLE on a list of acts they wanted to see in the Hall. “We’re somewhat of a heavy band and we have a small list that we’d like to also put some nods out and maybe plant a little seed, it’s a band called DEEP PURPLE, THIN LIZZY, RUSH, KISS, TED NUGENT, IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, MOTÖRHEAD… who we would love to invite through the door now.”

DEEP PURPLE was denied entry to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2013 — losing out to such artists as American pop singer-songwriter Randy Newman and R&B singer Donna Summer.

The members of PURPLE, who released a new album titled “Now What?!” on April 30, 2013 in North America via earMUSIC, say it is no big loss.

“I fought against, all my life, becoming institutionalized. So it really does not affect me,” singer Ian Gillan told Noisecreep. “But on the other hand, my family and friends and everyone that has stuck with us all these years, it means something to them. They love that recognition.

“To analyze it, and I’ll try not to sound cocky or anything, I will say it as respectfully as I can, it’s sort of like the Oscars and Grammys and the other awards like that — in the States, just like it is in England, and other places — these awards and honors are usually not decided by the fans, but by a cartel of influential people. These are the same people that decided THE MONKEES were America’s answer to THE BEATLES. [laughs]

“So I’m not too concerned about it. Maybe it will happen one day, bit if not, my diary is full and I’m very happy. It hasn’t affected our career but it does concern the fans — that’s who I feel for.”

By Something Else!

Roger Glover has, over his storied career, worked with a number of legends — from Ritchie Blackmore and David Coverdale to Jon Lord and Ian Gillan. None perhaps touched him like Ronnie James Dio.
“I loved working with him,” Glover says, in this emotional clip. “I loved the guy, too. I miss him.”
Glover produced Dio’s early recordings with Elf, beginning with 1972′s self-titled debut through 1974′s L.A. 59 and then Trying to Burn the Sun in ’75. Dio also sang on Glover’s 1974 solo project The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper’s Feast. Slowly but surely, Dio’s amazing voice and stirring stage presence were starting to become more widely recognized in music circles, even if none of Elf’s records had exactly flown off the shelves.
“It was before he was known,” Glover tells Pour Vigier Guitars. “I produced three albums with Elf, so I knew Ronnie very well. No one else did! But I thought he was just a fantastic singer. He had a great voice.”
By the mid-1970s, Dio was working with Rainbow, led by Ritchie Blackmore — Glover’s former Deep Purple bandmate. Glover would eventually join Rainbow, as well, in a stint that lasted from 1979–1984 — though, by then, Dio had departed for Black Sabbath and then a solo career.

Nevertheless, Glover’s friendship with Dio endured, through to the legend’s early passing from stomach cancer in 2010.
“He was a very caring guy,” Glover adds. “He was a hard-bitten, upstate New Yorker. He could be tough, and he could be cynical. He could be very funny. But his heart was pure. He loved what he did, and he always had respect for the fans. That means a lot to me.”
Roger Glover helped shape the sound of Deep Purple, along with late-period Rainbow, as a bassist, songwriter and producer — making key contributions to a series of undeniably classic tracks from “Smoke on the Water” to “Woman from Tokyo” to today. Here are a handful of our favorites. — NICK DeRISO
“BLUDSUCKER,” (ABANDON, 1998): The bassist’s fleet fingers are showcased as part of a brilliant stop-start cadence on this Glover co-written Deep Purple track, even as recently added guitarist Steve Morse makes his own presence known. Along the way, they add a muscular neo-prog feel to a track that originally found a home on Deep Purple in Rock.
“MAYBE I’M A LEO,” (MACHINE HEAD, 1972): Glover gets down and dirty on this funky co-written album cut, refusing to give way even for Blackmore’s churlish guitar solo. Jon Lord’s easy-going keyboard aside then opens the door for a more assertive return to the tune’s principal groove — aided by Ian Paice’s active flourishes at the drums.
“WEIRDISTAN,” (NOW WHAT?!, 2013): Glover and Deep Purple, after some time away, once again masterfully blend the metal, progressive rock and R&B influences that gave Deep Purple its unique persona — even as they stir in new flourishes to keep things fresh. ‘Weirdistan,’ which features a simply murderous cadence, features a string of gnarly outbursts from Steve Morse before Don Airey unleashes a keyboard solo that lives up to the song’s name. Throughout, you’ll find Glover hitting bass notes that could bring down buildings.

“WOMAN FROM TOYKO,” (WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE, 1973): Blackmore’s iron-bending riff gives way to a rumbling group-composed paean to a certain exotic love interest (or was it touring in Japan for the first time?), even as Glover (and Gillan) make their last Deep Purple appearance until 1984′s ‘Perfect Strangers.’ After a dreamy middle-section interlude, Glover adds a taut bounce to this No. 60 hit’s closing section.
“SMOKE ON THE WATER,” (MACHINE HEAD, 1972): Blackmore’s iconic riff, Lord’s portent-filled retorts. It’s all been celebrated and studied to the point of distraction. So, this time, wait. Wait 35 seconds. That’s when, after all that you’ve air-guitared a million times happens, we find something new to explore on this No. 4 smash: Glover’s grease-popping lines. Two minutes later, same thing. He works in locomotive contrast to everything that came before, giving the song these endlessly intriguing new pockets of musical inspiration.

A European version of DEEP PURPLE’s latest studio album, “Now What?!”, will be released at the end of November. This edition celebrates the success of the CD and the great spirit and excitement of the “Now What?!” tour that keeps bringing joy to many music lovers from country to country.

The record company and the artist would like to stress out that the double CD will be sold to retailers for a price which is lower than the usual price for any new stand-alone live release.
Fans who have purchased “Now What?!” will have the chance to buy the double pack, paying it less than a newly released live album.
Fans of vinyl will have the chance to purchase the live album as a limited heavy vinyl double LP.
The “Now What?! Live Tapes” will be available on all digital stores (bundled with “Now What?!” or available singularly) and all streaming platforms.
Details about the content of a different version of this expanded edition for the U.S. market, to be released in 2014, will be announced later in the year.
The “Now What?! Live Tapes” (European version) track listing:
01. Strange Kind Of Woman
02. Hard Loving Man
03. Vincent Price
04. Contact Lost
05. All The Time in The World
06. No One Came
07. Bodyline
08. Perfect Strangers
09. Above And Beyond
10. Lazy
11. Black Night
12. Smoke On The Water
The 12 live songs have been recorded in Rome, Milan, Gaevle and Aalborg. The live material has been carefully mixed to reflect the sounds and the emotions that came out of the speakers every night. 100% live, 100% real.
“Now What?!”, the 19th studio album from DEEP PURPLE, was released in North America on April 30 via earMUSIC, the Hamburg, Germany-based international rock label which is part of Edel Group.
After various songwriting sessions in Europe, the band recorded and mixed the album in Nashville, Tennessee with producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, PINK FLOYD, PETER GABRIEL, ALICE COOPER, KANSAS). The CD contain 11 tracks, including “Out Of Hand”, “Weirdistan”, “Uncommon Man” and “Above And Beyond”. The latter song references the band’s late keyboard player, Jon Lord, in the lyric “Souls having touched are forever entwined.”
In a recent interview with RadioMetal.com, DEEP PURPLE singer Ian Gillan stated about the songwriting process for “Now What?!”: “There were no rules. We started with nothing, except the right attitude; that’s all. Every day, it was the same routine: the guys walked in at noon and we all worked until 6 o’clock on the writing sessions. We just stopped at 3 o’clock for a cup of tea. After 6 o’clock, we would go home, have a shower, some dinner and go to bed early, even if I’m always up in the middle of the night, writing lyrics. We start at 10 o’ clock the next morning when we’re recording. But the writing is always noon until six. It starts with nothing. Ian [Paice, drummer] and Roger [Glover, bassist] would start jamming, playing for an hour non-stop and trying out some rhythms or grooves. They would stop and say, ‘No, that’s not good,’ then start something else and say, ‘Remember that. Maybe on Thursday we’ll try this again and maybe it’ll be a song.’ Everything emerged from jamming sessions.”

Deep_Purple_Perfect_Strangers_Live_DVD_2013Deep Purple have issued a performance clip of “Knockin’ At Your Back Door” as they release their new DVD, “Perfect Strangers Live”, today (and October 15 in North America).

The project captures the 1984 long-awaited reunion of the classic Deep Purple Mark II lineup of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice. It was the first time they had been together since 1973.

The lineup recorded a brand new studio album, “Perfect Strangers”, and headed out on tour. The band’s show in Melbourne, Australia was professionally filmed and is the only full-length concert recording of Deep Purple at this time.

The “Perfect Strangers Live” DVD mixes then-new tracks from the “Perfect Strangers” album with favourites from the early 70s.

Watch a performance of “Perfect Strangers” from the DVD here and of “Black Night” here.

This spring, Deep Purple released their new album, “NOW What?!”; the band launched a fall UK tour at the Manchester Apollo last Friday.

Deep Purple will release their first new album in seven years on April 26 (April 30 in North America).

After various songwriting sessions in Europe, the band recorded and mixed the project in Nashville with producer Bob Ezrin.

Guitarist Steve Morse is sharing his thoughts on the new record.
“This album stretches out in some new areas for us, instrumentally,” says Morse. “Bob [Ezrin] and [engineer Justin] Corky [Cortelyou] really got fantastic sounds on everything from the very first day. Musically, there’s a little bit of each of our lives in this album. Bob did the most amazing job with our preproduction; he really got ideas out of us that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.”

The band’s first album since 2005’s “Rapture Of The Deep” is rumored to be the perfect match from the original spirit of 70s Purple and a fresh and modern production.

“The title of our new album is still a question mark to all of us,” offered singer Ian Gillan when announcing the record. “We have recorded a new album, and it’s a fantastic collection of songs. At the moment that’s the only affirmative point we can offer…”

Gillan has recently revealed a few working titles of songs that might appear on the album: “Out Of Hands”, “Uncommon Man” and “Hell to Pay”.

I had just checked in to The Palace Hotel in Montreux prior to our appearance at the Jazz Festival. The elevator doors opened and out whooshed Claude on a scooter; had it been anyone else I would have been surprised. Flying by, he waved over his shoulder and called out ‘Hi Ian, see you later’ – then he was gone.

No doubt on his way to move things along in the right direction, because the Montreux Jazz Festival was his baby. He mothered it from infancy to what it has grown into…Internationally, the most highly respected and enjoyable annual event of its kind.

After the fire at the casino in 1971 Claude became a good friend to Deep Purple. The lunches at his house were memorable; he was always the perfect host.

He became known as Funky Claude after his bravery when the blaze took hold; he went down into the basement to lead out the frightened kids trapped there. ‘Funky Claude was running in and out, pulling kids out the ground’ as it says in the lyrics of Smoke on the Water. The words are a biographical outline of the making of our album ‘Machine Head’. The project could never have been completed had it not been for the brilliant efforts of the man who made things happen.

We shall miss him terribly.

Thank you Claude for all you’ve done.

100% Rock Magazine recently conducted an interview with Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On late Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord:

“Jon was a great character; wonderful. I mean… you know, he’s not been in the band for nearly 10 years but we were still in very close contact. And Jon was kind of like… we all looked up to him. He was there when Roger [Glover, bass] and I joined the band ’69 and he had a lot of… he was a fun guy; very bright, great sense of humor but he had gravitas as well.

“When we got the news [that he died], we were in Nashville in session [recording the ne walbum] there and we kind of expected it but it was still a terrible blow. And so it all went quiet for a while, needless to say, and then we started recalling the good times — as you do. His spirit is very much in the record; in the music. In fact I remember writing a line at the time: ‘Souls having touched are forever entwined.’ And that got into one of the songs and so he’s there in the music.

“I don’t think he’ll ever be away from it, really, because he created the foundation of Purple. I mean… there was so many influences coming in but his… a bit of rock and roll, soul, blues, folk music and all that sort of thing, but his input of orchestral composition and jazz were profound, to say the least. We still have that [big Hammond sound] with Don [Airey] and so that lives on. It was unique at the time because it wasn’t just that Leslie cabinet with a Hammond, but he also combined it with a Marshall amp as well which had never been done before. And so he had the power as well as the subtlety; a wonderful, wonderful sound.”

On the upcoming Deep Purple studio album:

“It’s being mixed as we speak. We’ve finished recording. It’s a new tone, it’s a new direction, it’s fresh stuff. I think it was all written and recorded in Nashville, and the reason we went there — not to make a country record, but because Bob Ezrin, our producer, lives in Nashville and so it made a lot of sense because he had all the studio facilities and back up and everything else. So it made it really easy. It was a great environment to record in, and yeah, there’s a bit of diversity on the record. There’s some sort of… Defining music is just so hard; it’s just really… it’s hard to define. If you think of a solo artist, you normally know them by their name; you don’t normally describe their kind of music, you just say, ‘It’s so and so or it’s so and so.’ But with bands, everyone feels an obligation to categorize then. I think when you’ve been around the block as many years as Purple has and a lot of other bands, you just listen to see what comes out. It’s not the same at all. So it’s kind of hard for me to describe it. I can’t compare it with any other album either, as far as I know. It will obviously find a niche somewhere when it comes out in April, so I’m looking forward to hearing it. [laughs]
